Tutorial 3: Penelo

This is the first tutorial I have made in a really long time! XD

This one was requested by akiko_yoko_yuki and she requested for me to recreate this icon that I posted in my Final Fantasy XII batch here.

Notice! I know some people HATE curves, but there is one curves layer here. Just one, a very simple one too!

Program Used: PS7
Original Image: This base here made by titangirl of sakusei.
Final Icon:

I followed some tutorial for the beginning part, but I can't remember which one it was. If you know who made a tutorial recently that uses this same type of coloring, please let me know!

Step 1: We start off with our base that was provided by titangirl.

We really don't need to sharpen our base or anything like that, it seems to be in pretty good condition already. If you wish to sharpen your base, however, now would be the time to do it.

Step 2: Time for our curves layer! Select Layer-> New Adjustment Layer-> Curves from the menu bar.

RGB: Input- 133
Output- 174

(Not exactly what I had originally, but extremely close! ^^)

You should now have this.

Step 3: I created a New Layer and filled with a pinkish color (#D7A2C9). Set this layer to Soft Light @ 45%.

Step 4: Another New Layer this time filled with a greenish color (#EAFA92). Set this layer to Soft Light @ 45%.

Step 5: Another New Layer filled with a bluish color (#95CFFB). Set this layer to Color Burn @ 55%.

Step 6: Time for a Hue/Saturation Layer! Yay. Layer-> New Adjustment Layer -> Hue/Saturation.

Hue: 7
Saturation: 50
Lightness: -1

(Again, not exactly what I had originally, but very close!)

Step 7: New Layer fill with a dark blue (#071221) at set to Difference @ 30%.

Step 8: Layer-> New Adjustment Layer-> Brightness/Contrast.

Brightness: -9
Contrast: 7

(Estimated, again.)

Step 9: Texture time! YAY! Apply this texture (by dearest I believe). Set this layer to Soft Light @ 30%.

Step 10: Apply this light texture (by ???). Set this layer to Overlay @ 60%.

Step 11: Another lovely texture. Apply this texture (by ???). Set this layer to Soft Light @ 38%.

Step 12: And then, for my last step I added a brush in the clouds right above Penelo's arm. The brush was previously part of texture by ohfreckle). Apply the brush in black and set the layer to Soft Light @ 100%.

And that's our final icon! It came out pretty close to the original, eh?

Other icons made using this technique:

If you'd like to request a tutorial of another icon, leave a request here please.
I'd also like to see what you all come up with using this tutorial!

Wonderful tutorial! I really love how all your icons turn out so colorful and clean. :D

I'll come back with an icon I made using this tutorial. :3

Um... la_xhal has some pretty coloring tutorials at fukikomu--perhaps that where you got some steps from? ^^;

I'd love to see what you come up with; of course, your icons are already lovely!

Hmm. I dunno. But I'll definently look! I have the worst memory lol.

Thanks so much! This icon was so beautiful, I tried to make something that resembles it but I failed so.. thanks for this tutorial!
I'm going to try it as soon as I can, and I'll show you the result.
Thanks again! ^____~

I really really like the result you came up with. I love the way the flowers kind of 'pop' beneath her chin!

Excellent. ^^
